Technology media outlet thenews published a blog post yesterday (July 31), reporting that Elon Musk and Sam Altman have reached a consensus regarding the AI singularity.
During an appearance on the Relentless podcast on July 25, Altman said: “We are now more or less already in the age of the singularity.” Altman also predicted that AI can already automate approximately 30~40% of the work humans are currently capable of doing, and said that AI is driving “the biggest economic transformation since the Industrial Revolution.”
On July 31, Musk posted on X: “AI has already surpassed humans in many ways. We are in the singularity.”
Note: The AI singularity is a hypothesis proposed by futurist Ray Kurzweil in 2005. It describes a theoretical scenario in which the rate of AI self-improvement exceeds humanity’s ability to monitor and control it.
In addition to Altman and Musk, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, called AI “a precursor to the singularity” in May this year. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claimed in March this year that artificial general intelligence (AGI) had already arrived.
