Elon Musk’s SpaceX announced today (August 5) that it is partnering with Nvidia to explore deploying AI computing capabilities beyond Earth and jointly develop computing satellites called Starmind AI1.
According to the ambitious blueprint released by SpaceX, the company envisions building an orbital network that could eventually reach 1 million satellites, creating a distributed artificial intelligence supercomputer in space.
If realized, the project would significantly expand computing capabilities beyond data centers on Earth and rely on laser links to transmit data between satellites at extremely high speeds.
Musk said during SpaceX’s Q2 2026 earnings call:
We believe the Vera Rubin architecture is the best architecture. We believe it is the best AI computer available today. We place great importance on close cooperation and our partnership with Nvidia at multiple levels, so we work exclusively with Nvidia.
Regarding specifications, Musk also said that the company plans to deploy Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale systems both on the ground and in space as part of its Starmind satellite program.
