Technology media outlet testingcatalog published a blog post yesterday (August 29), reporting that OpenAI is accelerating the release of its Astra model and adding the mozaik-alpha-fdm testing phase to expand internal testing.
Note: Astra is a new-generation AI model series currently being developed internally by OpenAI. Its codename continues the company's tradition of astronomical names (following Sol, Terra, and Luna) and means “stars” in Latin.
According to reports from The Information and other sources, Astra has demonstrated major breakthroughs in mathematics, physics, biology, medicine, chemistry, and cybersecurity. It has even reportedly solved several long-standing advanced mathematical problems.
As of now (August 2026), Astra has not been confirmed as “GPT-6,” but reports from multiple media outlets and industry insiders generally suggest that Astra is very likely the GPT-6 referred to externally, or at least one of the candidate names for GPT-6. Its parameter count may reach 10 trillion.
Based on testing content shared by users, the Astra model focuses on improving code writing and visual software creation. With just one conversational interaction, it successfully created a game similar to Grand Theft Auto 2 (GTA 2), as well as detailed websites, 3D objects, and voxel environments.
The outlet believes that if this highly efficient development capability carries over to the final product, developers, designers, founders, and other prototyping professionals will be the primary beneficiaries. However, testers also reported that Astra is currently in zero-shot testing and uses Max reasoning intensity, with reasoning times considerably longer than GPT-5.6 Sol.
