Unity China CEO Zhang Junbo: World Models Are Here, but “Generating a Game with One Sentence” Is Still Unrealistic

Unity China CEO Zhang Junbo believes AI can lower the barrier to game development, but games are systems engineering that require gameplay, numerical systems, and long-term operations—far more complicated than “generating a game with one sentence.” He also announced the fully upgraded Tuanjie Engine 2.0, which adds support for multiple console platforms. #AIGameDevelopment# #UnityChina#

Unity China CEO Zhang Junbo: World Models Are Here, but “Generating a Game with One Sentence” Is Still Unrealistic

According to a report by Yicai today, Unity China CEO Zhang Junbo said after the Tuanjie Engine 2.0 launch event that he partly agrees that AI will disrupt software and greatly increase productivity, but does not believe that AI will disrupt game engines.

He said, “AI is actually a good thing for engine companies.” AI can lower the barrier to developing games and using game engines, which also means engine companies can penetrate more deeply into the gaming industry.

In the long term, world models can indeed rapidly generate virtual spaces, but a world that can be viewed and experienced is not the same as a game that can be operated over the long term. Whether AI 3D generative models or future world models, they are more like assets. A game, by contrast, is a systems engineering project. It requires not only visuals and environments, but also gameplay rules, numerical systems, and interaction logic, as well as continuous iteration and long-term operation.

Zhang Junbo also poured cold water on certain ideas in the industry: “I don’t really believe in the idea of ‘generating a game with one sentence.’ Writing a couplet takes more than one sentence—what could you possibly make?”

As ITHome reported earlier, Unity China today released Tuanjie Engine 2.0, fully connecting to mainstream terminals worldwide and deeply integrating AI into the production workflow.

Tuanjie Engine 2.0 has undergone a comprehensive restructuring of its underlying architecture. It has been upgraded in three key areas—the core engine capabilities, cross-platform deployment, and an AI-native architecture—and introduces Tuanjie Codely, an AI Agent capable of independently carrying out game development tasks. It also connects the entire workflow from R&D and testing to marketing and distribution.

In terms of cross-platform support, Tuanjie Engine 2.0 officially adds development support for the PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch console platforms. This further improves its cross-platform development capabilities, creating a complete matrix covering PC, mobile, consoles, WeChat and Douyin mini-games, open-source HarmonyOS, and smart automotive cockpits, while connecting mainstream terminals worldwide with China’s local digital ecosystem.
