The Pentagon began adding customized ChatGPT and Grok AI assistants to its intranet this week, enabling millions of military and civilian personnel to use AI tools for routine, non-classified tasks.
This week, the U.S. Department of Defense added OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI's Grok for Government to its GenAI.mil intranet portal. The department hopes to provide personnel with more AI model options, allowing them to choose the appropriate AI tool for specific work requirements.
Defense Department officials said ChatGPT Mil is primarily designed for tasks involving extensive document reading and writing. Personnel can use the tool for logistics planning and routine administrative work. Grok for Government offers different reasoning modes and is mainly intended for supply chain tracking and research.
IT Home learned from the U.S. Department of Defense website that all data collected by the models mentioned above will remain within the intranet environment. OpenAI and xAI will not use government data to train AI models, and neither model may be used for combat operations or target-designation missions.
