On August 10 local time, Microsoft announced the release of its next-generation in-house text-to-image model, MAI-Image-2.6.
The model ranks second on Arena’s text-to-image leaderboard, achieving an Elo score of 1336, behind only OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 (Medium).
Compared with version 2.5, MAI-Image-2.6’s overall Elo score increased by 79 points, with text rendering showing particularly significant improvement, rising by 91 points. The model jumped from tenth place during the MAI-Image-2.5 era to second place, ahead of competitors from Meta, Google, and xAI.
MAI-Image-2.6 has made comprehensive progress across all of Arena’s subcategories. In the 3D imaging and modeling category, it rose from sixth to first place; in the cartoon, anime, and fantasy category, it rose from eighth to second; in the product, brand, and commercial design category, it rose from seventh to second; in the text rendering category, it rose from eighth to second; and in the art category, it rose from fourth to second.
According to Microsoft, MAI-Image-2.6 delivers improvements across multiple dimensions, including stronger text rendering, more refined portraits and 3D images, and more mature commercial and photorealistic styles. It performs better in application scenarios such as product showcases, brand visuals, and cinematic imagery.
In addition, the new model supports multi-reference image fusion, richer semantic understanding capabilities (that is, the ability to accurately associate text descriptions with image regions), and stronger control over reasoning logic, output formats, and resolution.
Microsoft released its first in-house text-to-image model, MAI-Image-1, in October 2025, entering the top ten of the Arena leaderboard upon its debut. MAI-Image-2, released in March 2026, rose to third place. MAI-Image-2.5, released in June, ranked third in the text-to-image category. The release of MAI-Image-2.6 marks a new stage in Microsoft’s technological iteration in this field.
Users can now directly try MAI-Image-2.6’s image-generation capabilities on the Arena platform. Microsoft plans to deploy the model to MAI Playground within this week and gradually launch it on Microsoft Foundry and other products.
