According to a SemiAnalysis report leaked externally, market rumors suggest that Google is working with AMD to develop a 10th-generation TPU project, which could become AMD’s first custom AI ASIC project.
The report says AMD has strong advanced packaging capabilities and a broad portfolio of SoC IP. Google and its customers are working to develop SoCs that integrate TPUs and CPUs in a single package to meet the demands of reinforcement learning workloads. AMD’s CPU IP could also be an important factor attracting Google to the partnership.
Google’s in-house AI ASICs have expanded from a single chip into a diverse product family, with chip design partners including Broadcom and MediaTek.
