The Financial Times reported yesterday that former OpenAI Head of AI Ethics Chloé Bakalar left the star startup in late July this year, less than a year after joining the company in August 2025.
An OpenAI spokesperson said: “We thank Chloé for her contributions. At OpenAI, AI ethics is not the responsibility of any single owner or team; ethical considerations are deeply integrated into the model-building process, with multiple research teams involved.”
Chloé Bakalar previously held teaching positions at several prominent academic institutions, including Princeton. Before joining OpenAI, she spent six years working in the technology industry at Meta. She developed and led Meta’s AI ethics program, integrating related principles into products such as Instagram and Facebook.
People familiar with the matter said that Chloé Bakalar’s primary work at OpenAI involved studying ethical approaches to model development, human-AI interaction, and debates about machine consciousness. She was also OpenAI’s only full-time ethicist.
