According to a report by abc7news yesterday, a robotics startup based in San Francisco has begun using humanoid robots to provide housekeeping and cleaning services.
Alex Koch, CEO and co-founder of Tau Robotics, announced that the company would begin offering humanoid robot cleaning services in San Francisco at a rate of $30 per hour (note: approximately 202.9 yuan at the current exchange rate).
Alex Koch said: “I think many of our initial customers will be people who previously did not have a housekeeper or did not clean their homes regularly themselves, so this business is currently about expanding the market.”
Current AI technology is still unable to fully control humanoid robots autonomously. Typically, the robots are operated by real people in a central control room, while AI serves an assistive role.
A video provided by Tau Robotics shows humanoid robots carrying out cleaning tasks. In one clip, a robot emerges from a small van and prepares to begin cleaning.
Alex Koch acknowledged that the technology currently has limitations, but said the robots are already capable of handling some simple household chores. “For example, vacuuming—that’s already very good. Basic cleaning tasks such as wiping kitchen countertops are also completely within their capabilities.”
The Tau Robotics website also lists the names of three robotic housekeeping employees:
Chelsea: Cleaning kitchens and bathrooms is my specialty. Sinks, countertops, mirrors, tiles, and floors—I always use non-toxic products to clean them. I follow the same cleaning process every time, so I never miss any details.
Elon: I provide regular weekly cleaning services covering the Mission District and Noe Valley. After a few cleanings, I will remember where your belongings are kept and return them to their original places instead of piling them together haphazardly.
Tony: Deep cleaning is my specialty. Baseboards, tile grout, window tracks, and the areas behind and underneath appliances: these are places where ordinary cleaning can never completely remove the dirt.
