By 2030, China’s computing power will consume 800 billion kWh of electricity, with 6 trillion kWh of green power entering the grid

According to CCTV Finance, a 10,000-GPU cluster currently consumes at least 200,000 kWh of electricity per day. Estimates indicate that China’s computing power will consume 800 billion kWh annually by 2030. The future of artificial intelligence is not only a competition in computing, but also a competition in electricity.

According to CCTV Finance today (12th), a 10,000-GPU cluster currently consumes at least 200,000 kWh of electricity per day. Estimates indicate that China’s computing power will consume 800 billion kWh annually by 2030. The future of artificial intelligence is not only a competition in computing, but also a competition in electricity.

The report noted that computing power is surging, while green power provides the foundation. As of the end of June, China’s installed non-fossil energy power generation capacity stood at 2.52 billion kW, accounting for 62.4% of total installed capacity. Nearly all of the country’s new electricity demand was met by green power.

Within the eight major hubs of the East-to-West Computing Project, the use of green power by large-scale green computing clusters continues to rise. At newly built data centers in Helinger, Inner Mongolia, and Qingyang, Gansu, green power accounts for more than 80% of electricity consumption. Nationwide, 172 computing centers have obtained Green and Low-Carbon 4A certification.

Today, the East-to-West Computing Project has mobilized trillions of yuan in social investment, effectively addressing issues such as the high energy consumption of computing power and fluctuations in renewable power generation. A green energy foundation is supporting China’s global AI competitiveness. By 2030, nearly 6 trillion kWh of green power will enter the grid.
