Tech media outlet Neowin published a blog post yesterday (September 2), reporting that Microsoft announced the official documentary “The Story of VS Code” after releasing Visual Studio Code version 1.136.

The documentary will be streamed on the official Visual Studio Code YouTube channel at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, September 4 (11:00 p.m. Beijing Time tomorrow, Friday). It will mainly review the project’s development over the past 10 years (VS Code 1.0 was released in April 2016).
Directed by Stefan Kingham, the documentary tells the story of how the editor grew from a startup project in Zurich, Switzerland, into a core cross-platform development tool, through firsthand accounts from members of the original VS Code development team and developers around the world.
The documentary will trace VS Code’s early development. The project was initially built by a small team based in Zurich, Switzerland, which was primarily focused on developing online tools for developers.
The report notes that many changes in recent VS Code updates are related to AI, and the documentary will present this transformation as one of its major themes.
Microsoft plans to present the product’s design and development through firsthand accounts from its original creators. The film will also incorporate perspectives from the broader developer community, explaining how the community influenced VS Code’s development trajectory.
