OpenAI announced an update to ChatGPT that improves the everyday conversation experience while giving free users access to more features.
For Plus and Pro users, OpenAI has updated the GPT-5.6 Sol model in the chat interface, making its responses more factually accurate and focused; the newly added slider lets users freely adjust the depth of ChatGPT's reasoning when generating each response.
Because this version of GPT-5.6 Sol has been specifically optimized for everyday conversations, it will only be available in ChatGPT's standard conversation interface. This release will not change the GPT-5.6 Sol version powering Work and Codex.
For free and Go users, OpenAI has upgraded the default model to GPT-5.6 Luna. Starting next week, the company will also fully enable unlimited text chats; for complex questions that require deeper thought, users will be able to call on more advanced reasoning capabilities at any time through the new “Thinking” button (this feature is subject to anti-abuse safety mechanisms). Usage limits for file uploads, image generation, and other tools will remain in effect.
