According to a report by the Financial Times, based on Amazon's financial results disclosed locally this Friday, the company has completed its follow-on investment of $35 billion in OpenAI ahead of schedule, bringing the total investment to $50 billion (note: approximately RMB 3382.45 billion at current exchange rates). Amazon currently holds approximately 5% of OpenAI.
Under the multiyear strategic partnership reached between Amazon and OpenAI in February this year, Amazon invested $15 billion in OpenAI at the time and agreed to make an additional $35 billion investment once specific conditions were met. However, although OpenAI failed to meet the two requirements of going public and achieving a technological breakthrough, Amazon still chose to fulfill its commitment early.
Sources said that Amazon made its final payment to OpenAI this week. In April, OpenAI renegotiated its contract with Microsoft, unlocking more possibilities for the partnership between Amazon and OpenAI. This was a key prerequisite for Amazon's agreement to invest the full amount.
Amazon is also an important financial backer of Anthropic, a major competitor of OpenAI.
